2PS Top 12 Restaurants

2PS Top 12 Restaurants

What is one of most Heartland owners favorite activities?  Why eating, of course!  The list of our "Top 12 Restaurants" includes several places we've enjoyed with other Heartland RV owners, several places that were recommended by other Heartland owners and yet others that we'd highly recommend to others.

Here are our favorites, in no particular order.  Don't be afraid to tell us your favorites!   (Caution: Food porn ahead)

Chicken fried steak in all of it's glory

Lambert's – 2 locations in Missouri and 1 in Alabama

We're veterans of all three locations and have enjoyed our visits every time.  Lambert's is famous for their 'throwed rolls' as well as their 'pass arounds' that are included with each and every meal.  All three locations have ample parking if you happen to be passing by while towing your RV.  Be prepared for a wait as they are normally quite busy. Here's a little tip:  If you visit the Sikeston, Missouri location and have a small party ask if there is room at 'the bar'…if there is…they will seat you right away…best seats in the house, in our opinion.

Shady Maple Smorgasbord – East Earl, PA

Pennsylvania Dutch cooking at its finest!  There were at least 20 entree options, salads, soups, 15+ side options, multiple beverage options, and countless dessert options! It is a foodie's paradise, for sure!

Be sure to allot time to visit the magnificent gift shop on the lower level…it boasts over 40,000 square feet of shopping enjoyment!

This establishment has plenty of parking if you're pulling your coach.

Gonzales Burgers – Donna, TX

Do you enjoy a good burger??  You'll want to be sure you visit Gonzales Burgers if you're ever in the Rio Grande Valley are of Texas.

The burgers are absolutely HUGE and tasty to boot!  Sides of fries or onion rings are just as big.  It's a good idea to order one burger and share it…or go for the gusto and eat the WHOLE thing!

The restaurant is very small and most often there is a long wait to order and to get a table.  For the best experience arrive before opening time and get in line for first dibs.

Chicken Breast in Spinach Cream Sauce

Alpine Haus – New Braunfels, TX

German cuisine in a quaint little cottage in the Texas Hill country. A great place for a quiet dinner for two…or four…or more.

We both went out of our comfort zones a bit and instead of ordering our normal schnitzels I went with 'Rinder Goulash' or beef tips in gravy and Michael tried the 'Hühnerbrust Geschnetzeltes' better known as sautéed chicken breast in a spinach cream sauce. Both were excellent!

We even tried dessert, sharing a piece of Black Forest Chocolate Cake while our dining companions shared a piece of Apple Strudel. Awesomely good!

Al Gen Supper Club – Rhinelander, WI

We really enjoy the Friday fish fry.  It's 'all you care to eat' cod with sides of potato salad, macaroni salad, potato pancakes, French fries, cole slaw and bread.  You gotta have a good old 'fish fry' while in Wisconsin.

If you're not a fan of fish, Al Gen also offers delicious steaks, chicken and ribs all served in a log cabin dining room.

Edgar & Glady's – Nordheim, TX

A little café smack in the middle of the south Texas oil fields…pretty much the middle of nowhere.  We've always had good service and enjoyed our meals.  Our favorites?  Chicken fried steak and Stuffed Hamburger Steak.  Yum!

Hamburger steak stuffed with cheese, onions and jalapenos....delicious!

Peyton's Place – Montgomery, AL

Only open for lunch this is a 'meat plus 3' establishment.  That means they offer several entrees each day for you to choose from and then they have a list of sides and you get to choose 2 or 3…whichever you decide to go with…to go with your entrée choice.  MmmmMmmm…everything is out of this world good.

Dish after dish after dish of goodness.

Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room – Savannah, GA

Located in the middle of a gorgeous residential area, Mrs. Wilkes offers good ol' southern cuisine.  The restaurant opens at 11:00 am but the line of restaurant go-ers begins forming well before that.  We arrived about 10:30 and were roughly number 30 in line.

You are seated at large tables that seat 10 and with complete strangers but before long you're all chattering away about where you're from and how wonderful the food is that you don't even mind that you were once strangers.

Serving is family styles with platters of fried chicken, beef stew and bbq pork or other dishes as it changes. Sides can include macaroni & cheese, rutabagas, warm potato salad, greens, creamed corn, stuffing, cole slaw, cucumbers, green beans, corn bread, black-eyed peas, butter beans, squash casserole, sweet potatoes, rice, gravy, jambalaya, okra and baked beans.

A bit pricey but so very worth it!

Willa Mae's Scotch House – New Orleans, LA

While in New Orleans several years ago we were looking for some good fried chicken and stumbled upon Willa Mae's. Located in not the best of neighborhoods but with a huge following they serve some of the very best fried chicken either of us have ever enjoyed.

They serve a few other things but the chicken is what they're known for...and with good reason.  We had no problems with service but some reviews report poor service.
A favorite: Pepperada Chicken with just the right amount of spice

Peking Chinese Restaurant – Rhinelander, WI

An all-time favorite restaurant that we've been patronizing for 20+ years. They offer great lunch specials and dinners are sizable.

We prefer a 'sit-down' restaurant over a buffet as the food is more fresh and specially made and this is one of the best!  This is a 'must' visit every time we are in Rhinelander.

Babe's Chicken Dinner House – Sanger, TX

We attended an Oklahoma rally in November 2012 and a trip to Babe's was on the agenda…and we're so glad it was!

There are several different locations and a few have different offerings but we can certainly vouch for both the fried chicken and chicken fried steak  !Delicious!  Sides aren't anything to complain about either.

Family Style - chicken fried steak on top, fried chicken on the bottom

Ming's Garden – Montgomery, AL

We're always searching for a good 'sit-down' Chinese restaurant over a buffet as I am a Chinese food-holic.  Michael likes to say I should have been born in China.  :-)  It didn't take us long before we found Ming's Garden when we lived in the Montgomery area and once we found it our search ended.

Michael declares that they have the best crab Rangoon.
